First in The Thompson-Newman Files launches November 5, as a Denver detective’s murder case uncovers her husband’s hidden past and a transatlantic conspiracy

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM, October 29, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — British author Andrew Harwood will release Cold Ground, his debut novel and the first instalment of The Thompson-Newman Files, on 5 November 2026. The book will be available in hardcover, paperback and eBook formats.

Cold Ground follows Denver police detective Stephanie Thompson-Newman as a routine homicide investigation leads beyond her own department and into a world of intelligence services, old alliances, and secrets with the power to change the future. Her husband, Drew, is a successful British venture capitalist known for his calm under pressure.

As the case advances, the most carefully guarded part of his past comes into view. Their marriage sits at the center of the story, a partnership of warmth and loyalty put under strain by what each of them discovers. Stephanie has to decide what she will do with the truth, and what it means for her marriage.

The novel blends police procedural investigation with international intelligence plotting, with scenes set across Denver, London and The Hague.

In a review published on Reedsy Discovery, book reviewer Donna Costello, who has spent six years reviewing titles for Indie Reader’s Discovery Awards and three years as a freelance manuscript editor, described Cold Ground as “a clever, compulsive thriller that will keep readers on the edge of their seats with its intricately layered plot and compelling characters.” Costello wrote that the novel’s central marriage was portrayed with unusual realism for the genre, noting that “readers will find their marriage realistic and healthy, something that is wonderful to see in a genre that’s often fraught with divorce.” She concluded that the book was “a fantastic novel that James Patterson fans will love to sink their teeth into.”

“Stephanie and Drew are at the heart of this book. I wanted readers to spend time with two people who genuinely love each other, and then watch what the story asks of them,” said Harwood.

The publication date coincides with Britain’s Guy Fawkes Night, commemorating the discovery of the Gunpowder Plot in 1605, when conspirators attempted to blow up Parliament.

“There is something fitting about a book built on buried secrets and hidden conspiracies arriving on the fifth of November,” Harwood said.

Cold Ground is the first of a planned multi-book series. A second novel, Coldest Trade, is currently in development. Harwood has also created a collection of companion origin short stories exploring the characters and events behind The Thompson-Newman Files. These are available to readers through his Substack publication, including First Light, a free introduction to the world of the series.
