“FOR A MORE PERFECT UNION” BOOK PROPOSES RANKED-CHOICE VOTING AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO THE TWO-PARTY SYSTEM

Author John B. Bloom draws on three decades of experience in New York and Virginia party politics to outline election reform proposals

SPOTSYLVANIA COUNTY, VA, UNITED STATES, October 23, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Author and political activist John B. Bloom announces his new book, “For a More Perfect Union,” which examines how political parties operate and proposes changes to the way Americans vote. Bloom has run for office as a Republican, a Libertarian, and a member of New York’s Conservative Party, and the book draws on his experience across those organizations.

At the center of the book is a proposal for ranked-choice voting, a system already in use in several states and cities. Under this system, voters rank candidates in order of preference instead of choosing only one. Bloom argues that the approach would give independent and third-party candidates more opportunity to compete and would allow voters to support smaller parties without concern about how their vote affects the final result.

The book draws on Bloom’s experience taking part in party activities in New York during the 1990s and in Virginia more recently. He describes a 2015 resolution he proposed within the Republican Party of Virginia concerning how the party should choose its presidential nominee, and he shares what he learned about how party organizations make decisions.

One chapter is devoted to redistricting. Bloom discusses changes to the boundaries of Virginia’s 4th Congressional District over the years and argues that a wider field of parties on the ballot in every state would lead to more competitive races. He also explains why he believes commissions made up of members of the two major parties may face limits in drawing competitive maps.

Bloom also shares his own political path in the book. He joined the Republican Party in 1980 at age 18 and voted for Ronald Reagan twice. He left the party in 2016 and later became active in third-party politics, eventually becoming chairman of the Constitution Party of Virginia.

“We emphasize diversity in people,” Bloom writes. “Why not in political parties?”
