Former journalist/CBS TV producer Troy Bastian earns Fall 2026 BookFest Silver Medal for maritime adventure conceived before real-world cartel violence erupted
LAS VEGAS, NV, UNITED STATES, October 26, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — When former journalist Troy Bastian began outlining his latest novel, The Violent Sea, in 2025, he imagined an American surgeon caught in an escalating conflict along Mexico’s Pacific coast. What began as a fictional exploration of cartel violence, moral choices and survival would soon bear an unsettling resemblance to real-world events.
On February 22, 2026, Mexican military forces killed notorious cartel leader Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho,” triggering a wave of retaliatory violence across western Mexico, including areas near the coastal communities where Bastian’s novel occurs.
For Bastian, the headlines represented an extraordinary convergence of fiction and reality.
“I was less concerned about the politics or optics of what was happening around Puerto Vallarta and Manzanillo, and more interested in the dynamic of people unaccustomed to violence being forced into character-defining situations,” Bastian said. “What happens when everything you’ve believed about yourself is suddenly put to the test?”
That question drives The Violent Sea, which recently earned Bastian second place and a Silver Medal in the Action-Adventure category at the Fall 2026 BookFest, recognizing a novel that combines high-stakes maritime adventure with an exploration of grief, morality, love and redemption.
The story follows Dr. Judah Mancuso, an Indianapolis orthopedic surgeon who travels to Mexico for five days of tuna fishing, hoping to escape the grief of losing his teenage son and the collapse of his marriage.
But when the Mexican Navy intercepts his fishing charter and demands his medical assistance for a critically ill sailor, Judah’s carefully planned retreat becomes a nightmare. Stranded ashore without his passport, phone or money, he is swept into an escalating cartel conflict that forces him to treat wounded civilians, soldiers and cartel gunmen alike.
Amid the chaos, Judah develops a relationship with a compassionate young nurse whose courage awakens feelings he thought he had buried. But an act of brutality ultimately pushes him toward vengeance, setting in motion a harrowing return to the sea and a final confrontation with the man he has become.
Beyond the Violence, a Story of Moral Survival
While the cartel conflict provides much of the novel’s tension, Bastian says the violence is ultimately a backdrop for a more personal story about loss, compassion and the choices that define a human life.
“I would never want to emulate anyone else. I have my own voice, and comparing any literary piece to a classic is just outright wrong,” Bastian said. “But I think I had those stories in mind when I cast off to examine the inner struggles of a man faced with circumstances that challenge his view of control.”
Drawing on the tradition of literary maritime fiction, The Violent Sea uses the unpredictability of the ocean as both a physical threat and a reflection of Judah’s internal struggle.
Early readers have praised the novel’s combination of suspense and emotional depth. A review from the Cascadia Book Club described Bastian’s ability to combine high-stakes adventure with an introspective examination of grief, morality and redemption, while highlighting the novel’s themes of compassion and personal healing.
A Storyteller with Roots in Journalism and Television
Bastian brings decades of professional storytelling experience to the novel. A former newspaper journalist whose work appeared in publications including Sports Illustrated and Archaeology, he also co-produced the 1994 CBS television film Armed and Innocent.
His previous literary works include The Cricket War and The Space Between, stories that, like The Violent Sea, explore complicated relationships, human frailty and the consequences of personal choices.
Published July 28, 2026, by 4Comm, The Violent Sea has begun attracting readers through word of mouth, literary recognition and author appearances. Bastian launched his book-signing schedule October 24 at Copper Cat Books in Henderson, Nevada, where he sold 16 copies during his first event.
For Bastian, however, the measure of the novel’s success goes beyond awards and sales.
At its heart, he says, The Violent Sea is about a man who sets out to escape his past, only to discover that surviving the world around him may be easier than confronting the world within.
