LOS ANGELES, CA, UNITED STATES, September 8, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — After more than four decades in medicine, the physician and author of the medical breakthrough book “Outsmarting Obesity: A Doctor Reveals Why We Gain Weight, Why It Matters, and What We Can Do About It” is using science, storytelling, and provocative questions to encourage readers to look beyond the page
For more than 40 years, Stewart Lonky, MD, has watched medicine transform from an art rooted in observation and human connection into a field increasingly driven by computers, data, and technology. As AI reshapes healthcare and conventional thinking about obesity is challenged, Lonky offers readers a simple message: wake up, ask questions, and demand to know what the facts really say.
“All my work is centered around humanity’s biggest questions and obstacles. My latest book, The Conspiracy of Data: Fail Safe—Not Safe, which is my first fictional piece, takes a closer look at AI and its impact on medicine. I don’t think enough people realize how much healthcare has changed. This is important because the need for quality care remains the same,” says Lonky.
Since Stewart Lonky began practicing medicine, the number of active U.S. physicians has more than doubled—from roughly 477,000 in 1985 to more than 1 million today. But Lonky believes the greater transformation has been how medicine is practiced, as technology has reshaped how physicians diagnose, document, and interact with patients.
“I’ve spent more than 40 years in medicine, and whether I’m writing nonfiction or fiction, my goal is the same: to challenge assumptions, examine the evidence, and encourage people to think more deeply about the forces shaping their health and their lives,” Lonky explains.
In his book Outsmarting Obesity, Lonky challenges the familiar explanation that obesity can be reduced to eating too much and exercising too little. Drawing on his medical experience and research interests, he explores the roles that genetics, epigenetics, environmental exposures, obesogens, metabolism, and behavior may play in the obesity epidemic.
“I want people to ask more questions and demand more facts,” Lonky says. “If we simply accept what we’re told without examining the evidence, we’re missing an opportunity to understand what is really happening.”
That philosophy extends beyond obesity.
Lonky’s debut novel, The Conspiracy of Data: Fail Safe—Not Safe, uses the medical thriller genre to explore another rapidly evolving reality: artificial intelligence’s growing role in medicine. At the heart of the novel is a question that extends far beyond the pages of a thriller: “What happens to medical care when there is no humanity involved?” says Lonky.
Whether examining the biological and environmental factors behind obesity or imagining a future in which artificial intelligence plays an increasingly dominant role in medicine, Lonky uses both fact and fiction to encourage the same response: pay attention. Ask questions. Look deeper.
“The goal is to get people thinking,” Lonky concludes. “If my books make someone stop and ask, ‘Is that really true?’ then I’ve accomplished something worthwhile.”
